Most watched movies of the weekend and their reviews.

Brace yourselves, it's movie time! 💃

After a skimming and scanning and watching a bunch of recently most watched movies, here are 4 we should talk about. It's a plus that they center around people of colour, cos #Blacklivesmatter 😎 . Legooo💃

1. Project Power: So I heard a bunch about this movie before seeing it.... They had me at "Jamie Foxx" tho. 😁 Now that's a black actor who'd always bring the action and warmth to the screens, and for this movie, he was spot on!

Synopsis: Frank Shaver the 'good' cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt),  Robin the dealer who wants to be a rap artist (Dominique Fishback), an ex soldier, Art (Jamie Foxx) who is really trying to find his missing daughter, chase after a crime spree started by a chain of  empowered or rather 'superpowered' criminals who have access to a drug with the ability to give 'Power' for 5 minutes. Turn on the heat and the waterworks for this one, as they tell a 'superhero' tale whilst being relatable and human.

Review: They couldn't have chosen a better cast. *drops mic*

Okay, okay, won't drop mic yet 😀

The casting in this movie was superb, and while there are rumours of this being a prelude for a sequel, all the 'I's were dotted and the 'T's crossed, so it definitely passes WELL for a stand alone.

Rated 6/10, and the latest "most watched movie" as at release weekend, I still have to ask; How would you rate it? Watched while gripping the edge of your seat? Or not seen it yet? I'd like to hear from you ;)

2.  Santana: Number 1 movie on Netflix worldwide as at this weekend, so I had to look twice at this high energy Angolian movie, filmed in South Africa, with latino cartel vibes.

Synopsis: The story follows two law enforcement brothers; Dias and Matias as they chase down a notorious drug lord- Ferreira and discover as they get closer to their target, that he's the same man that murdered their parents 35 years ago. Ferreira is on the run, and to get to him, Dias and Matias must break the laws they have sworn to protect.

Review: Although, Number 1 on Netflix, which is a big hype for a non-Nigerian, African movie, Santana is rated 3.9...... Ouch. The movie is R- rated and I must say; the nudity involved (Dias taking a shower, skimpily clad dealer babes....) Was not necessary. I tried to like this movie for the hype' sake, but I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. 😖

Have you watched it? Lemme know. Not seen it yet? Still lemme know if you'd brave it. 😉

3. Seriously Single: A free-living bestie and a commitment craving one... Typical, right? And makes for a quirky rom-com. Enough of relatabe laughs to go round.

Synopsis: A 21st century social media expert just wants true love and commitment and can't wait to show off  online. So when she gets a delivery on Valentine's day, she continues to live stream, believing it's a 'surprise' from her boyfriend. Yeah, he surprised her. With a break up and her stuff from his place. Her free living bestie urges her to embrace single hood, have fun and meet new people.

Review: Fulu Mugovani can act. Wow. Her ability to swap emotions and expressions added to the incredulity and originality of the story. Though the plot took one too many roundabouts before hitting a climax. The story really could be quoted as a "singles handbook" with Dineo's (Fulu Mugovani) ability to 'jump' from one relationship to the other and finding it hard to enjoy her own company, singles can pick a thing or two between the laughs.

Rated 5/10, it'd pass for a Hollywood rom-com without the obvious South African accent.

Seen this movie? What'd you think? Planning to see it? Come back and lemme know your thoughts will you? Great!

Last but not the least:

42: Didn't plan to review a "non-2020" movie this week, but the passing of 'Black Panther' last weekend made Chadwick Boseman movies pop up on the most watched radar, and this was next to Black Panther on that list.

A hit as at 2013 release date, and now in 2020, this story will be a tribute to both Jackie Robinson and Chadwick Boseman as a real depiction of African struggles with racism.

Synopsis: Major League executive  Branch Rickey drafts (amidst strong opposition) African American Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) as a player. Jackie is outspoken and open minded. Not one to be shut down or intimidated easy, but now, his strength his tested amongst extreme hostility.

Review: Sport movies (especially biographies) most times tend to be boring, but 42 just has this compelling story that gets you hooked as a person of colour, or with empathy if you're not (a person of colour). Chadwick Boseman bringing life to the character is a really pretty icing on the cake tho.

Rated 7.5 and has been called a 'great movie' by critics.

Seen this movie? How would you rate it? Haven't seen it yet? Check it out. It just could be your little tribute to the late Chadwick ;(

And it's a wrap for now. Your comments and feedbacks are much expected and appreciated.

See you soon; XoXo; RHD 💜💜
